What if the world
Turned off the news
Was not influenced
By manipulating views
Listened more closely
To their circle of few
Created community
Where understanding grew

Do we need commercials
To tell us we're wrong
We must buy their product
For us to belong
Newspapers radio
Fox news be damned
What if we experienced
A true natural plan

Billboards and junk mail
Demanding our time
We must pay attention
Or we're out of line
New and improved
Oh what the hell
Must we truly buy
What they have to sell

If we shut off the noise
And no one could hear
Maybe the powers
Would be the ones in fear
No place to spew
Their political scheme
Perhaps in the silence
They could hear their own scream

Listening to nature
Can that be all bad
Does the sound of a robin
Make you feel sad
The wind thru the trees
The rain on a roof
The beauty of snow
Do we need any more proof

Without any violence
Or protests in streets
We simply turn off all
Their negative beats
No bloodshed required
No wars for ideal
Stop reading their papers
Let's live in the real

Our heads in the sand
Not what I do seek
But perhaps with our neighbors
We learn how to speak
Our porch is a campus
For those walking by
Let's stop for a moment
Smile and say hi

How are their kids
Do they have a green thumb
What is their secret
For growing those plums
Can they change a tire
Or cut down a tree
Let's start some dialogue
It's absolutely free

Yes technology has helped
In so many ways
But why not eliminate
The bureaucratic daze
Spin doctors rule
With their ends in mind
Let's shut off the valve
To their only pipeline

Breathe deep and smile
And know in your heart
Eliminating the noise
Is a wonderful start
Today and tomorrow
Next week and next year
Let's celebrate each other
With joy and not fear

Jeff Johnston has written fourteen books of poetry.  Many of his words have been the therapy which he himself used to calm his mind, body and spirit. Over the last seven years he has been coping with and attempting to alleviate his Clinical Depression, Mood Swings and Anxiety Attacks.
